Data recovery, backup & transfer

Data recovery, backup & transfer

Data can be recovered and transferred from many forms of digital devices, including:

Digital Cameras

Memory Cards

USB Memory Sticks

Laptops

Desktops

External hard drives

Internal hard drives

Floppy discs

Data recovery, backup & transfer can be a time consuming process. The time depends on the amount of data you need to recover or transfer, and also any damage present to your media. In simple cases your storage media can be mounted into a different computer and your data recovered. In more complex circumstances advanced software is needed to scan through your media to work out what can be recovered.

Ideally, and usually cheaper for you, you need a spare external drive with enough space on it to store your recovered data. If you haven’t got one, we recommend a rugged, military-grade external hard drive. You can get one from Amazon (http://amzn.to/23Iw2Ak), currently with a discount, for less than £50.

With data recovery, the data that is recovered is often not complete. This leads to a data reconstruction process. This is where best guesses are made to “fill in the blanks”. Doing so can often repair corrupt files so that they can be loaded to allow at least some of the useful information to be recovered. We have a large selection of tools to help optimise this time consuming process should it be necessary.

If your data storage device is physically damaged (e.g. if your hard disk is no longer being recognised by your computer or is making unusual noises), then we are unlikely to be able to be able to recover your data.

DO NOT keep using your computer if it is making strange noises. These noises can mean that more and more damage is being done to your data.

Remember, the best data recovery option is to not need it! It is far better to make adequate backups of your data in advance of a problem occurring. If you require any assistance in developing a robust backup strategy please do not hesitate to contact us.

We Are Geek can help with backups plus transferring data to a new computer if needed.

Some data recovery may be able to be done remotely. Larger, more complicated jobs are done using a pick up and return service, and are only available locally in Wallsend.

We can help with data recovery, charged at our usual rates (per hour).

Data Transfer

As part of our data transfer service we will transfer your old data from your current machine to a new computer. This includes data files such as word documents, music, pictures etc.  Previously used software can be installed onto your new machine if specified (and if you have an available licence). We will also install the latest drivers for your hardware, whether it be new or old.

  • Transfer old data to new computer
  • Re-install some programs for new system, if needed
  • Find drivers for new system for older hardware

As part of our data transfer service we can make sure that your personal files and folders are extracted from your old machine and moved to your new one.

Data transfer can be done remotely, or onsite in your home or office. If you’ve got a lot of data and need it transferred to a laptop, we may take it away and work on it in our Wallsend office and return it at a convenient time for you.
